Roadside Attractions acquires 'Joneses'

Roadside Attractions has picked up U.S. theatrical rights to social satire “The Joneses,” toplining Demi Moore and David Duchovny.

Pic, the feature debut of helmer Derrick Borte, bowed at Toronto in September and was considered to be one of the more commercial titles available at the festival.

An ancillary rights deal is still in the works.

Borte also scripted the film about a seemingly perfect family that turns out to be a shill for brands. Film co-stars Amber Heard.

Producers are Doug Mankoff, Andrew Spaulding, Kristi Zea and Borte.

Roadside plans to platform the film in spring of 2010 in both mainstream and arthouse theaters.

How UNICEF became a Halloween treat

(CNN) -- I grew up under the impression that I was the best trick-or-treater in the whole wide world, because my grandmother invented it!

The whole thing was her idea! My grandmother and her friend UNICEF started it way back when she was born in the early 1500s. I thought UNICEF must be a pretty cool lady if she was hanging out with my grandmother.

Occasionally I'll ask people if they know about UNICEF, and sometimes they don't. But if I then mention the little orange Trick-or-Treat boxes on Halloween, suddenly everyone knows UNICEF.

We grew up carrying those Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes on Halloween night, and now our kids do. These days, the candy bags may be fancier than pillowcases, and the costumes may come from the store, but the orange boxes remain the same.

In 1950 when Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF began, kids simply decorated old milk cartons to collect change. The idea was as simple then as it is today: On Halloween, besides asking for candy, why not also ask for UNICEF donations? Nothing that might sting, nothing big -- just the pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters that normally languish behind the couch, in old winter coats, on the floor of the car, or in the good ole spare-change-bowl-by-the-door. The money that falls through the cracks -- so American kids may raise a little money for their peers who are suffering, far away from costumes and candy.

Since Halloween 1950, that "simple plan," that "nothing big," has raised more than $144 million for UNICEF. That's $144 million in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters!

For many kids who are threatened by disease, natural disasters and war in places like Somalia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and too many other developing countries, this spare change has meant the difference between thriving and merely surviving, health and illness, even life and death.

In fact, the $144 million in small change has contributed to some remarkable news: About 50 years ago, the number of children who died every day from preventable causes before their fifth birthday was more than 50,000. Three years ago, that number was 25,500.

Despite a recession, despite the continuing effects of a global food crisis, despite other seemingly unbeatable odds, that number has now dropped to 24,000. Trick-or-treaters like you and me, your kids and mine, and members of civic groups like Key Club, can feel some pride that we have helped make this happen.

But the appalling fact remains: 24,000 children die every day from preventable causes like hunger, measles, pneumonia and tetanus. The vaccines, medicines and technologies that can prevent and treat such illnesses already exist. Not one child should die from these illnesses in the year 2009.

It's projected that Americans will spend about $4.75 billion on Halloween this year, buying everything from candy and costumes, smoke machines and life-size inflatable lawn ornaments. But I bet that this year, like last year and many years prior, there's still change behind that couch and in those old coats.

We need that simple plan: A "nothing big" again this year. Not only to help those children, but to teach our own kids. We can get 24,000 down to zero. And we can show our kids that they can make a difference; that every penny counts, that they can save a child and change the world. So they'll carry the boxes now, you and I can fill the bowl by the door to the brim and be ready, and this year Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF can make that change.

It turns out that although my grandmother did establish the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, and was president for over 25 years, and while she was a great lady, she did not, in fact, invent Halloween. Or trick-or-treating. She just perfected it.

David Duchovny is a guest on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'

The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build in Lena is ahead of schedule thanks to the great weather. The new house is up and local volunteer construction crews are installing drywall, painting and beginning the landscaping work. The cast of the show continues to be hands-on and the production crews are capturing it all on camera. The Stott family returns from their California vacation on Wednesday. Actor David Duchovny is flying in to help with the build during the last few days of work. He will be the show's celebrity guest.

A bone marrow registration drive is being held at the build site. A bone marrow transplant is what saved Joey Stott from her battle with leukemia. The Extreme Makeover crew flew in her donor to help with the build.

“I was glad to provide a small part of changing her life five years ago. I'm hoping to contribute just a little bit more to her back on her feet,” says Joey Stott's bone marrow donor Tom Wihelm.

He was there with the cast of Extreme Makeover to surprise the Stott family on the first day. One of the stars of the show, Paige Hemmis says their introduction will be featured when the episode airs this fall.

“It's the first time they actually met and there was not a dry eye in the house. To see someone who gave so much of themselves to save another person's life is truly amazing,” says Hemmis.

The couple responsible for getting the Stott family on the show is also at the build site helping out.

Robert Winter and Nikita Ernst met Joey Stott at Highland Community College and they became fast friends. They say she inspires them because she never gave-up on earning her degree or hesitated to help others, even after battling leukemia and losing her home in a fire.

“She does everything and she doesn't ask for help. She doesn't ask for recognition. She just works so hard,” says Ernst.

They say Joey had no idea they wrote the letter three months ago.

The Cincinnati Reds and Pampers have joined forces to help UNICEF protect mothers and their newborns against maternal and newborn tetanus.

On Thursday, July 16, the Reds will host the inaugural Pampers/UNICEF Night at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds will donate the cost of one tetanus vaccine to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF for each ticket purchased to Thursday’s 7:10 p.m. game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fans can purchase discount tickets to Thursday’s game at: www.reds.com/UNICEF. Three dollars from each the discounted tickets will be donated to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

She's back with Duchovny, but friends fear he may relapse

Though the reconciliation of David Duchovny and Tea Leoni is absolutely very real, several of Leoni's friends remain concerned she's making a mistake.

''I know David has gone through counseling and a rehab program for his sex addiction and all that, but I worry he'll relapse and it will start all over again,'' a longtime friend of the actress said Tuesday.

''I'm just worried that Tea will be hurt and humiliated even more than she already has,'' added the veteran Hollywood producer.

Be that as it may, another Leoni associate told me Tuesday that the ''Spanglish'' star has made it very clear to Duchovny that this is his last chance. ''Obviously David knows that and he gets it,'' said the source, who also counts the star of ''Californication'' and ''The X-Files'' as a pal.

In recent days -- including the well-documented Father's Day beach frolicking near their home in Malibu, Calif. -- Duchovny and Leoni have been seen together frequently, always with their two children.

It is said their devotion to their daughter Madeline, 10, and son Kyd, 7, is a big part of the couple's attempt to save their marriage -- yet friends say there's much more to it.

''Beyond their kids, David and Tea are truly very much in love. ... It's all very complicated, but they are still crazy about each other,'' added the second source.

''Yet these things are always a work in progress.''

David Duchovny and Téa Leoni looked like the picture perfect family on June 14 as they frolicked on the Malibu beach with their two kids, smiling and playing in the water.The couple has shown a united front – and no discord – since they announced their separation last fall after Duchovny voluntarily entered rehab for sex addiction. Sources tell PEOPLE the couple remains close for the sake of their children Madeline, 10, and Kyd, 7.

"Their relationship has really improved," says a pal of Duchnovny, who stars in the Showtime series Californication. "They're still in love. They very much care for each other and whatever happens they are working it out for the kids."

Duchovny's willingness to enter rehab was always in the spirit of saving his marriage, a source tells PEOPLE. "He's doing his best to move forward with his life and career," the source says.

The couple, married in 1997, have been spotted together more frequently in the past few months. From courtside seats with the kids at New York Knicks basketball games to family vacations, all signs point to making their relationship work.

"Their first priority through everything was staying close for their kids and making life as great as it can be for them," says a source of the couple. "They'll always be a family."

The confusion around "Californication" begins with its title.

"I didn't think the show was about sex, you know? I didn't want to lead with that," says star and executive producer David Duchovny, looking startlingly fit between takes on the series' Culver City set. "I thought the show is more about the heart of this family that he's trying to raise. We just couldn't come up with a better title. I blame myself. But I'd rather have a good show and a bad title than vice versa."

Despite perhaps putting the wrong foot forward, the Showtime series has garnered major nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, the British Academy of Tilm and Television Arts and the Golden Globes, at which Duchovny won a lead actor award as Hank Moody, the conflicted, smart-mouthed jerk and loyal, loving family man with the impulse control of a tumbleweed.

"There's this heart in the show that he's truly in love with this one woman and that he's a good parent, in a really horrible way. These are paradoxes that I thought were mature," says the Yale- and Princeton-educated Duchovny. "This was more adult, more articulate, less of a man-boy and more of a man. Comedy for grown-ups, starring a grown-up."

Hank is the unflatteringly candid picture of the romantic-turned-cynic, struggling to rebuild the family he let slip away with his estranged girlfriend, Karen (Natascha McElhone), and their daughter, Becca (a sullen teen captured to a T by Madeleine Martin). But ask those who didn't give "Californication" a chance and you'll probably get a curled lip and a description of a sexist show about a sex-addict writer who treats women like sex objects.

That's not this show.

"Separate 'sexist' from 'sex.' There's a lot of discussion about sex on the show, and I think people have a knee-jerk reaction: 'Oh, my God, that's sexist!' Duchovny says. "People kind of lose their minds as soon as they hear the word or prefix 'sex.' The fact that Charlie Runkle [Evan Handler] has so much sex is evidence that women are seen as very sympathetic creatures," he says, laughing, of Hank's less-than-studly agent who uses his handsome client as an enticing wingman.

"Hank's lack of respect is really for himself, not for anybody else. There's a line in the next episode that says, 'We're all grown-ups, there are no victims here.' It's not like anybody wakes up with Hank and he's a different guy than he was the night before."

One unnoticed, wry touch on the set of Hank's dining room is the presence of the book "The Myth of Male Power" -- the movers and shakers on the show tend to be the women, presenting the various magnetic poles that make Hank dance.

"If you look at the way he gets involved with women, he's very passive. It's like this despair comes over him; he can't go against whatever is flowing at the time," Duchovny says. "If he was a guy who was always on the make, it would be harder to cut him the slack. He's just kind of -- if he can't be with the one he loves, he's loving the one he's with."

Some of the actor's favorite moments on the series so far illustrate its range: from the naked and ridiculous to the emotionally naked and sublime. He still laughs when he sees an early-season scene of a drug-fueled romp between Hank and a friend of Karen's, which abruptly erupts into what he calls "the double-puke scene."

"But there's also a scene from the first season where I walk with Becca on the Venice canals and I sing Dylan's 'If You See Her, Say Hello' to her. It just really surprised me, the sentimentality that I liked very much about it. When you juxtapose it with the crudeness and the explicit nature of some of the other stuff, it just seems real and right."

So why does the show not have a bigger audience? It's possible the misguided title and tag lines (one implying the show is about a midlife crisis), and media descriptions inaccurately pegging Hank as a sex addict have blurred with tabloid headlines about Duchovny's personal struggles.

"I don't concern myself with people's perceptions of the show," he says, becoming visibly uncomfortable. "It's all very personal. The things that I do on the show have never had anything to do with my personal life. There has never been any kind of parallel that we've done."

There is still hope, as the show enters Season 3 with guest stars such as Kathleen Turner and Peter Gallagher, that it will come into focus for those who can't see the forest for the sleaze. "For the most part, I feel that we're a drama that doesn't know it's a comedy," said the star. "To me that feels right, that feels like life to me. Because we all think we're in a drama, but actually we're in a comedy."

Actor-slash-"Jessie's Girl" crooner Rick Springfield has signed on to play himself in four episodes of Californication, sources confirm to me exclusively.

As I tweeted earlier this month, producers of the Showtime dramedy put out a casting call looking for "an actor who experienced huge fame in the 80's to play themselves as a now down-on his-luck-ex-celebrity waiting tables to get by."

Props to Springfield for having the guts to poke a little fun at himself. And for being down with the "tasteful nudity" and "simulated sex" that I'm told the role requires. (That noise you hear is millions of middle-aged General Hospital fans squealing, "We're going to see Dr. Drake's naughty bits!")

My sources tell me that 2-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey and film director George Hickenlooper (Factory Girl, Hearts of Darkness) are right now visiting Washington DC lobbyist Jack Abramoff in Cumberland Federal Prison. Abramoff, of course, was responsible for one of the biggest political scandal to hit the nation's capital since Watergate, and is the subject of a screenplay Casino Jack starring Spacey and directed by Hickenlooper and written by Norm Snider (Dead Ringers) and produced by Bill Marks, George Vitetzakis and exec-produced by Donald Zuckerman and Richard Rionda of Hannibal Pictures. A portion of the project is being financed by Brad Feinstein of Titan Multi Media Group in a deal being negotiated by Paradigm. The story is described to me as a modern day GoodFellas set in Washington DC that plays like a thriller involving Karl Rove and others in former President George W. Bush's inner circle. Cameras will roll later next month.

I'm told that Kevin Spacey is set to star as Jack Abramoff, Hayden Christensen will play Abramoff's closest associate Mike Scanlon, Spencer Garrett (Public Enemies) will play Majority Leader Tom DeLay, and Arrested Development star David Cross will play Abramoff crony Adam Kidan. The production is also in talks with Tea Leoni as Abramoff's wife.

After weeks of extensive negotiations with Abramoff attorneys and prison officials, Spacey and Hickenlooper were finally granted access late this afternoon for a creative discussion with Abramoff who is serving a 6-year sentence. Apparently the disgraced former lobbyist, who produced two Dolph Lungren movies in the early 1990s, is a big Spacey fan -- ironically citing Usual Suspects as one of his favorite films. Spacey, who is a personal friend of former President Bill Clinton and who couldn't be more the political opposite of Abramoff, apparently appreciated and respected Abramoff's openness to talk. According to an insider, “Abramoff was in good spirits and very charming with the actor. For two guys who couldn't be more different, they seemed to get along very well.”

Because of Son of Sam laws, Abramoff is legally unable to profit from any story told about him. But he apparently agreed to meet with Spacey and Hickenlooper because he believes no one has heard his side of the story. My source tells me, "Jack feels he has nothing to lose if he can at least convey his perspective even if it's from inside prison walls. Frankly, he feels like he was thrown under the bus by his fellow Republicans, especially John McCain who wanted to use Jack to help sell himself to the American people as the great reformer. The reality is Jack wasn't doing anything that wasn't happening on K-Street already. In fact it's still happening to this day and everybody knows it."

Also my source tells me that both Spacey and Hickenlooper had met Abramoff separately once before in the early 1990s when the former Washington lobbyist had a Hollywood shop set up with his brother Robert Abramoff to produce movies. "Jack used to get around the Hollywood circuit quite a bit before he came to DC," my source says. "It wouldn't surprise me if he wouldn't end up back there after he gets out of prison."

In 2004-2005, as you may recall, Abramoff was jokingly referenced by George Clooney during the 2005 Academy Awards. More significantly, Abramoff was convicted of defrauding American Indians out of millions of dollars in casino money, a scam that brought down a number of prominent Washington figures, among them Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay and Ohio Congressman Robert Ney. The story even gets more interesting because, according to the FBI, Abramoff was associated with a man who allegedly hired two Mafia hit men to murder the owner of a fleet of Florida casino boats Abramoff was in the process of purchasing. The Abramoff story is filled with many surprising twists and turns and has become an iconic symbol of the Bush era and all it represented.

This will be Hickenlooper's first feature since the controversial Edie Sedgwick/Andy Warhol biopic Factory Girl. A self-proclaimed political junkie, he's also the cousin of the very popular Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper who hosted last summer's Democratic National Convention. The filmmaker chronicles his cousin's role during that convention in the upcoming documentary series Hick Town which he produced with R.J. Cutler (The War Room, September Issue).

Actress Tea Leoni has a lot of labels, a modern day Carole Lombard known for her comedic acting style and blonde beauty, the 79th sexiest woman in the world in 2000 according to FHM, mother of two and Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF. Now the New York City actress has added one more label to her resume-benefactor to LARAS’ House.

Leoni has donated to LARAS’ House to be auctioned at its First Birthday party May 7th, signed DVD’s of some of her movies as well as signed DVD’s of the first three seasons of the TV series, the X Files. They’re signed by her husband, David Duchovny, who starred in the series. She also has signed for the auction, a movie script of Jurassic Park III in which she starred. The big item that she is giving to help LARAS’ House have a successful fund-raiser is lunch in New York City with her, her treat for the highest bidder for that lunch date at the Birthday Party.

Leoni burst on the entertainment scene when she won a role in Angels 89, a new series modeled after Charlie’s Angels, which never went into production because of a writer’s strike. That opened the door however for her to win a lot of starring roles in movies with such co-stars as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys, Robert Duvall and Morgan Freeman in Deep Impact, Nicholas Cage in Family Man, George Hamilton and Treat Williams in Hollywood Ending, Adam Sandler in Spanglish, Jim Carrey in Fun With Dick and Jane, Ben Kingsley and Luke Wilson in You Kill Me and Greg Kinnear in Ghost Town. She also starred in two television series, Santa Barbara and The Naked Truth. Her latest film to be released later this year is Manure in which she stars opposite Billy Bob Thornton.

Leoni says, “David and I are animal rescue advocates and have adopted our pets that way. We like the job being done by LARAS’ House and have let them know that when our beloved dog, Blue, passes on, we could be looking to them to help find a suitable replacement. I am looking forward to treating your highest bidder at the First Birthday fund raiser live auction to lunch here in the Upper East Side.”

Life is too short to read bad books. On the actress's don't-miss list: stories of a girl standing up to her teacher, an immigrant family almost swallowed up by their new country, evil—and the possibility of redemption—lurking in the next cubicle, and a pair of patriots led tragically astray.
I've been reading the classics over the past few years: things I didn't read in high school for one reason or another, or that I read and have no memory of because I was too focused on boys. The decision was probably influenced by my being married to a guy who came thisclose to finishing his PhD in English literature. He has the greatest knowledge of literature of anybody else I'm close to. Over the years, I've noticed a lot of Penguin Classics piling up on the bookshelves. It reminded me that there are works of literature I might want to read before I die. I've had a very good education, but I didn't recognize the gold I was being given then. I'm only partly joking when I say I wish I could go back to Brearley or Sarah Lawrence at 40.

I think you can come to great books too soon. I know I read Moby Dick too young; to me, it was just a story about a whale. I don't know if you can come to a book too late, though I know I'd avoided A Tree Grows in Brooklyn because I thought it was juvenile. I was prepared to read it quickly, just to have it as a notch in my bedpost, but I was stunned by it. There are reasons that they're classics, reasons you will float when you read them. They're not art first—I think they're life first.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Set in Brooklyn, just before the first World War, this novel is not simply the story of a girl coming of age. It's raw and uncensored in the way it deals with poverty and class. The main character, Francie Nolan, doesn't have much of a childhood, and mostly she accepts her circumstances. But when one of her teachers tells Francie that she's a terrible writer, she rejects it. It's a real gift when you're doing art to understand that what you're doing is right. Something similar happened to me, and I remember being frustrated by the idea that I had to accept that an adult had a better estimation of my talents or my limitations. Francie is only a child—and yet she is certain the teacher is wrong.

Lipshitz 6, or Two Angry Blondes

My mother gave this book to me. She grew up in Amarillo, Texas, where a lot of the story is set. Of course, if anyone from Amarillo makes any waves in the world, everyone from Amarillo is going to know about it. The novel is a fictionalized account of the author's Russian Jewish immigrant family. Starting at the turn of the century, it follows them as they almost get swallowed by America. It's actually two stories that collide, with this line: "That's not the end. This is the end." Suddenly you've jumped to the present, and one descendant is an Eminem imitator in New York. I can't say it's a seamless transition—but I was knocked out by this book.

A Yellow Raft in Blue Water
By Michael Dorris

There's something about Michael Dorris's writing that I found shockingly sensitive to the female voice. He tells the story of a single family from the points of view of three women. The book starts with the teenage Rayona. Then you cut to her mother's perspective, and you realize that a child can look at her parent's actions and think, "You were so cruel," but we very rarely experience our parent's interpretation of that same time. My mom and I can do that now. As I'm sitting here, I'm moving my daughter to New York at the exact same age that I was when I moved to New York. Now I can ask my mother, "Why did we move?" As a child, I was given reasons, but they were probably reasons to make it easier, not necessarily the truth. I'm very conscious of wanting to be honest with my daughter about my motives.

The Exception

Jungersen brings up questions in this thriller, such as, Where is evil? Is it possible that it resides in all of us? The story follows four women in a seemingly benign office that collects and distributes information on acts of genocide. When two of the women receive terrifying e-mails, the threats are a catalyst. People begin to commit heinous acts of bullying against each other. They also find ways to justify their behavior—and what's so key is that self-deception. You realize at the end of the novel that while we might not necessarily find a way to end genocide, we can possibly wake up and find a solution to our own behavior.

American Dreamers: The Wallaces and Reader's Digest, an Insider's Story
By Peter Canning

I was so taken with this history of the couple who started Reader's Digest and became two of the country's wealthiest individuals. DeWitt and Lila Acheson Wallace began the company with altruistic and patriotic intentions. They wanted to make knowledge more accessible to people. Eventually, the U.S. government used the magazine—the foreign editions especially—for its own political agenda, pushing propaganda through it. For me, this book is eerily relevant. It's not just some ex-employee talking about the king and queen getting old and how Parliament came in and ruined everything. Canning shows where the Wallaces should be held accountable and how they became so vulnerable. I think this story is a modern American tragedy.

What a difference six months can make! Last October, X-Files star David Duchovny and his wife, Téa Leoni, announced that their 11-year marriage was history.

But the couple looked more in love than ever during a romantic getaway on the exotic Caribbean island of Mustique.

“They had dinner at 9 p.m., and David had his arm around Téa just about the entire time they were sitting there,” an eyewitness at Basil’s Bar and Restaurant on March 25 tells Star.

“I saw them kiss each other tenderly on the lips twice at the table. They certainly seemed to be totally in love with each other.

“There were a few bottles of Corona beer on the table, and David and Téa looked really happy, holding hands and laughing.”

The romantic scene would have been inconceivable last October, when the pair (they have two children, daughter West, 9, and son Miller, 6) announced they were separating, due in part to David’s admitted sex addiction.

David, who plays a sex-crazed writer on his critically acclaimed Showtime series, Californication, announced in August, “I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction. I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.”

The couple -- who married in 1997 and have two children together -- danced the night away at Basil's Bar and Restaurant, lovingly gazing into each other's eyes as they held each other close.

"[David] had his arm around her the whole time they were sitting at their table drinking Corona beers. Twice he reached across to kiss her on the lips," an onlooker said. "They certainly seemed to be in love."

Showtime's "Californication" has beefed up its cast for its upcoming third season, adding Kathleen Turner, former "OC" star Peter Gallagher and "Numbers" and "Rescue Me" regular Diane Farr.

Turner is set to play a lit agent who has a thing for David Duchovny's skirt-chasing lead, while Gallagher will play a university dean who tangles with Duchovny. Farr will play a sex-crazed grad student.

"Californication" is set to bow its third season in the fall.

The two recently went on vacation together with their two kids to the Mustique island in the West Indies.

David Duchovny and son Kyd Miller were spotted in New York City recently (no date is mentioned)... Here is the report:

Just Another Ride on the Bus
So...Elizabeth and I jumped on the cross town bus to get to Fifth Ave. I rarely ride the bus around town, but after this experience I think I might start.

I got on first and quickly made my way to the second of the two buses (it was a double bus). I got to the spinney part where the two buses connect (where I like to sit), but there was someone there and I didn't want to sit straight across from them. That can be awkward. So I sat in the first row of the second bus. Elizabeth quickly joined me. I was sitting there looking out the window enjoying my little bus ride, when Elizabeth nudged me and whispered, "look who it is?" I looked at the two people sitting in my favorite seat and realized it was David Duchovny and his little son!

We both did our best to keep cool, but you could feel the excitement in the air. It was at this point that his son dropped his backpack and the legos he was playing with. He jumped down and picked up his things, but left a lone lego on the floor of the bus. Over eager and without hesitation, Elizabeth and I both politely alerted him that he had dropped a lego (enthusiastically pointing as well).

David and his son both leaned over to see the lonely lego on the floor. The little guy jumped down and picked it up. David smiled at us and said, "Thanks!" Yes, that's right. David Duchovny looked at me and said thanks. I think that pretty much makes us best friends. What do you think?

I tried to sneak a picture on my phone, but it didn't turn out overly well. This truly made Elizabeth's New York trip complete. Nothing says New York like a seeing a celebrity in the wild.

Sighting - Tea Leoni Visits Madison Ave Lilly Store

Yesterday (March 20th) was a star-studded day at 1020 Madison Avenue (The Pink Pelican). Not only did they have a visit from Julia Roberts in the morning, but THEN actress Tea Leoni came into the store the afternoon! It was her first visit to the store but she was knew that it had opened and had been trying to find time to come in and shop.

On this visit, she came in specifically for swim and tried on numerous bathing suits and ended up purchasing the Kena Bandeau in the What a Wonderful World print, as well as the Largo Skirt. The Madison Avenue team reports Tea was great and really excited to come in and shop!

We met each other at none other than Candle Cafe for an early lunch at 11:30. To our surprise (well, not really a surprise anymore!), David Duchovny walked in, yet again, to sit down for lunch as well. Looks as though we both had the same intentions in mind; to beat the crowds! Other than the staff, naturally, David Duchovny was the only other person in the restaurant besides us. Nicole still couldn’t work up enough courage to ask him for a picture, but we’re hoping that he’ll approach us one day! Wishful thinking! For all of you interested in knowing, I believe he ordered the Spicy Peanut Stir-fry and was reading the book Oblivion: Stories. I sound like such a creeper right now, but I promise I’m not! Just an admiring fan is all!

There was not a single empty chair in the Branford common room at 3:35 p.m. Sunday afternoon. By 4:00, almost 100 students had crammed into the room, sitting on laps, windowsills and the floor, chattering excitedly and sipping cups of tea. When David Duchovny GRD ’87, star of television series “The X-Files” and “Californication,” finally entered the room, the students immediately fell silent.

“Don’t be quiet on my account. You’ll be sorely disappointed,” Duchovny quipped.

Over the next hour and 15 minutes, Duchovny answered students’ questions and shared stories ranging from working on the set to encounters with crazy fans to his policy of never reading his own Wikipedia page.

Before beginning, however, he motioned to the young girl sitting on the floor in front of him.

“I have my daughter West with me so couch your questions accordingly,” he said.

It was at Yale in the late 1980s, where he earned his master’s degree in English literature, that Duchovny became involved in acting.

“I was interested in writing for screen and television but I wanted to know what it was like to speak the words,” he said. “So I started hanging around the Drama School like a stray dog and sat in on classes.”

After landing a part in a Cabaret show, Duchovny began taking acting classes in New York City twice a week. In 1988 he moved to Los Angeles for a role in “New Years Day” (1989) and got an agent, leaving Yale and his unfinished dissertation behind. While it would “make [his] mother proud” were he to finish his dissertation, tentatively titled “Magic and Technology in Contemporary Fiction and Poetry,” Duchovny said he is “just hoping for an honorary degree at this point.”

Still, he said his time in academia greatly affected his later career.

“There’s some truth to the idea that acting is instinctual, not intellectual. I had to unlearn some of the intellectual side,” he explained. “But I got there through relaxation, not dumbing down. The more relaxed you can be, the more truthful you can be.”

Duchovny admitted that he never planned to be a television star.

“I didn’t want to do television because I was a snob like everyone else,” he said. “But life has a certain way of happening to you, as much as you try to steer it.”

He decided to take the role in “The X-Files” for the money. The story itself, he said, “wasn’t really my thing.”

“It still isn’t really my thing,” he added, laughing. “I thought it was just a silly science fiction show — I was wrong every step of the way.”

While Duchovny is best known for his roles in front of the camera, his true loves, he said, are writing and directing. He gained experience while working on “The X-Files,” he said, and went on to write and direct “House of D” (2004), a movie about an American artist living in Paris.

“Being a director is kind of like having no skill at all,” he said. “It’s like being a general — you’re not necessarily the best fighter or the best anything. But you’re able to marshal everyone in the right direction.”

Duchovny told stories of on-set embarrassments like being attacked by a stuffed animal while filming a scene with special effects, and crazy fans, including one about a woman who had a picture of him and his wife, actress Tea Leoni, tattooed on her arm. He shared the awkwardness of being caught singing along to Bree Sharp’s song “David Duchovny” (“I didn’t realize my name rhymed with so many things,” he noted), and revealed that his favorite line from the movie “Zoolander,” in which he played J.P. Prewitt, a retired hand model, is “I’m a finger jockey.”

Finally, one student asked: “Have you ever edited your own Wikipedia page?”

Duchovny’s answer was simple: “No.”

“It seems like cheating in a way,” he said. “It’s better not to know what people are saying. The truth is, I’ll only remember the hurtful things because that’s human nature.”

Seven students interviewed, only some of whom were “X-Files” fans, said they were impressed with the talk.

“It was insightful,” Adam Thomas ’12 said. “I didn’t realize he did so many other things. It was interesting to hear how he brings acting and writing and directing together.”

Will Wong ’09 said he was impressed with Duchovny’s down-to-earth demeanor.

“It’s great that he seems to be able to separate his real life from his screen life,” he said.

And for Duchovny, “real life” includes watching television with his children. When asked about his favorite shows, he said the only ones he watches regularly are the popular Disney show “Hannah Montana” and the Nickelodeon series “iCarly.”

“Sometimes we’ll be flipping through channels and one of the early episodes of ‘X-Files’ will be on and I’ll just think, ‘Wow, I sucked.’ I did a lot of learning on the job,” he said.

The truth is out there. And it may be clichéd to say that it's stranger than fiction, but that doesn’t make it untrue. I came to discover that firsthand today at the Yale Bookstore in New Haven.

But the oddest thing of all was a very random David Duchovny sighting. Believe it or not-and you will believe it because I have a picture!-the star of "The X Files" was browsing the bookstore with his children. So we ran from the periodicals section to the lower level after a kindly older lady gave us the scoop. And, sure enough, there he was. Needless to say, I discreetly assailed him with my camera, and he graciously posed for a picture as we made small talk.

Me: You know, I’ve become a big fan of The X Files late in life.

David (looking at my twenty-something self): It can’t be too late in life…

The moral of the story? You never know what-or who-you’ll run into at the bookstore…

Q: Do you know what you're shooting next?
TL: No, I don't. And I, you know, we moved to New York and the kids are in new schools and I need to stay close by while they get used to all that.

Q: Is it a relief to be talking about work for a change? You've had... it's been a tough year, obviously... There's the tabloids and all that kind of stuff... A relief to put that stuff aside and actually be proud of a film and talk about that kind of stuff?
TL: Yeah, I mean it hasn't [laughs] Thanks for asking about it. It has been hard, but it's also been great. I mean it, it has been a great year. And it is fun, to come up out here, and it's a festival that is *festive*, which I can't say about, I don't know, some of the other ones.
